Meet Álvaro

Álvaro Miranda, born in 1982, is a Panamanian artist with a full-time career as a professional painter and muralist.

From as early as age six, Álvaro loved drawing and sketching. One of his earliest memories is of the white cranes flying above the river where he grew up. Due to financial limitations, Alvaro wasn’t able to study art. He worked as a tour guide until 2009, when his fascination with nature caused him to pursue wildlife painting.

Early Paintings

His early works demonstrate an eye for realism and delicate textures. Entirely self-taught, Álvaro’s passion allowed him to transition his career to painting professionally.

In 2014 Álvaro illustrated Rubilito, a bilingual children’s book about a migratory hummingbird, and Babble On. A year later he illustrated Abelita: Queen of the Bees.

Mediums

Since pursuing his art professionally, Álvaro’s versatility allowed him to master a variety of techniques such as watercolors, acrylics, oils, airbrush, pyrography, graphite, colored pencils, and pastel pencils. His focus centers on acrylic and oil paintings.

Awards & Exhibitions

In 2018 Álvaro was awarded the Upcoming Artist award. A collection of Álvaro’s nature paintings were featured in a 2022 Por Amor Al Arte exhibition in the Biblioteca de Boquete, and in 2023 he displayed a second series in his exhibition Fragmentos de Color.

Álvaro’s love for art is reflected in the precision he takes with each painting. Every step of the process is hand-crafted, from sawing and building each frame, to stretching the canvas, to priming, painting, and sealing each artwork.

Álvaro works as a painting instructor while maintaining a schedule of mural painting and exhibitions. He lives in Boquete, Panama, surrounded by cloud forests, mountains, and abundant wildlife which provide inspiration for his paintings.
